Ziele/Ideen
We addressed mobility challenges for visually impaired people. As it is not possible for them to drive a car or a bycicle, they are completely dependent upon public transportation and walking. There are plenty of tactile lines on the pavement in Flanders, but they are often covered by bycicles, bins or more recently, by E-steps. It is very dangerous for visually impaired pedestrians to trip over. The obstacles also make them lose their orientation on the road.
Kurzbeschreibung
We raised awareness about the importance of obstacle-free pavements, primarily for visually impaired people, but everybody benefits from it (f.e. elderly people, wheelchair users, parents with a pushchair). We did this by placing stickers on all sorts of obstacles, so that the owners could scan a QR-code, learn more about the project and be more thoughtful in the future. We developed the concept with a group of visually impaired people, who provided us with crucial testimonies and insights.
Resultate
After the campaign, we were invited to give talks in schools and at official mobility events organised by municipalities. We have also had some media coverage in regional media (Antwerp, West-Flanders and Limburg), which was great publicity for our organisation and our mission. Many frustrated pedestrians have sent us pictures of obstructed pavements, which we have uploaded to our website. We kept our audience up to date on the campaign through Facebook and our monthly newsletter, and with some advertisement budget we managed to reach a bigger audience than usual. Unfortunately we have no quantifiable results for our social media campaign.
